So I tried... RoodyMental: Rhythm RPG

Every edition of So I Tried… I try a game I’ve never played before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I’ll take half an hour, no matter how bad it gets or how poorly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I’m switching it up and trying a mobile game called RoodyMental: Rhythm RPG.

What I thought it was

Before I started playing RoodyMental: Rhythm, all I knew was that this was a mobile rhythm game made by a company based in the same city as me. I’m always excited to check out titles made right here at home, so I was really excited to join in and try these out! Plus, it’s great to play a game on my phone when I have to wait for appointments or during a break at work!

What it actually is

RoodyMental: Rhythm is much more than just keeping time with the music. This is a rhythm game mixed with an RPG set in a world trying to recover from a devastating pandemic. If that wasn’t bad enough, an AI threat known as the AiPOCALYPSE is attempting to wipe out all of humanity. So it’s up to you to destroy the AI mines that are trying to destroy the world of Aideate. To do this, you control two weapon systems, both of which are fully customizable and expandable to suit your playstyle; one is placed on the left and the other on the right. This allows you to learn the rhythmic pattern of the enemy and shoot the blocks that move up from the bottom of the screen. You can’t go crazy trying to hit all the targets as quickly as possible; you will have to do this in time with the music. As you complete the levels, you’ll move across the map to the next location, where you’ll find a new puzzle for you to challenge. In between, you get the chance to visit the store to purchase new upgrades or items that you can use by spending in-game currency or real money.

It is virtually impossible to play the game without headphones or without sound. Believe me, I’ve tried it. I thought I could just tap the blocks as they crossed the line, but you can’t time it right and it will fail. So make sure you have your earbuds or headphones with you when you’re ready to play, unless you’re somewhere where you can turn up the volume.

RoodyMental game over

I’ll keep playing

I’ll definitely keep playing RoodyMental: Rhythm on my phone, well, for those times when I have my headphones on or I can turn up the volume! It’s addictive, has catchy music and works great to play when you have some time to kill, and it entices you to come back because you have to make sure you log in every day to get your daily rewards. The game is great at remembering exactly where you left off, so it’s incredibly easy to jump right back in and pick up the level where you had the last challenge. If you like rhythm games that feel more like an RPG and consist of more than just keeping time with the beat and require some strategy to be successful.
