Anne Hathaway revealed that she stopped receiving romantic movie scripts after her twenties

While Anne Hathaway captured hearts as Mia Thermopolis, Princess of Genovia, in the 2001 film The Princess’s Diary the actor revealed that she was no longer considered for roles in romantic films after the age of 20. That changed with The idea of you (on Prime Video on May 2), starring Nicholas Galitzine in Michael Showalter’s latest film.

“I had received a lot of romantic scripts in my 20s, and in my 30s I was so focused on my family life and motherhood, and trying to find whatever my path would be, becoming an actress while really doing this had a really rich personal life,” Hathaway told reporters. “So I didn’t notice that I hadn’t gotten a romantic script in a long time.”

“When (The idea of you) found its way to me, and I’m so honored that I was the first choice for this, it was such a beautiful character in such an amazing world. Part of me asked the question, “But where have these stories gone? Why are they stopping?'”

As producer Cathy Schulman explained, Hathaway was the actor in mind to play Solène in the film from the very beginning of the film’s development process.

“It’s something I always teach my young executives not to do, which is not to develop a whole project hoping you get one actress, because that never works,” Schulman said.

“Just in this particular case, she’s the only person who read it. She was our first choice. She said yes. And it was a dream come true. … We wanted to take the character out of the book and continue to personalize it into a way in which she felt she could be one of us, and I believed Annie could bring that aspect to Solène.”

Based on the novel by Robinne Lee, 40-year-old Solène works at an art gallery in Los Angeles, and is a divorced mother to her teenage daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin), after finding out her husband Daniel (Reid Scott) was cheating. on her.

At the beginning of the film, Daniel is supposed to take Izzy and her friends to the Coachella music festival, but Solène has to stick to the plan for a work commitment. There she meets 24-year-old Hayes (Galitzine) from the boy band August Moon, when Solène mistakes his caravan for the public toilet. Izzy has also been a fan of August Moon since childhood.

Playing out a kind of fanfiction-like fantasy, Hayes and Solène have an immediate attraction, which starts off as a secret relationship while Izzy is away at camp, but is eventually revealed to the world.

While there has been a lot of focus on the chemistry between Hathaway and Galitzine, the actors emphasized that this was truly a circumstance to create a truly great friendship.

“We are both very playful people,” Galitzine said. “Communication was always through a very open channel.”

“I’m just so happy that I made friends with such an amazing person, and someone so talented and so far ahead of them,” Hathaway added.

“I really felt cared for and supported on this film. I just knew that whatever I did, Nick was there with me every step of the way. … We always kept it light with each other. We were allowed to make mistakes with each other. Nothing had to be perfect. It wasn’t exciting that way.”

A major change for the film from the novel is that Izzy is an older teenager about to go to college, rather than a 13-year-old girl. As Schulman explained, the team behind the film felt this was necessary because they wanted a character that Solène could talk to and be open with, including in conversations about her relationship with Hayes.

“The message is ultimately that women should not be put in boxes,” Schulman emphasizes. “You can be more than a mother. You can be more than a grandmother, … you can work, you can do many different things, and it was very important that we could see what it was like to go from one phase from motherhood and a first marriage to the possibilities of greater happiness.

“I just think for women you reach a certain age where it’s pretty easy to say, ‘Hey, I’ve done it. I’ve been a mother, I’ve had a job. I’ve been a wife and now ‘I’m very happy and I’m okay with just leaving everything else out.” …And that would have been fine…But just to be able to say, ‘It’s not done yet.’
