Airbnb will rent X-Men Mansion, Up House and Prince’s Purple Rain Home

The mansion, perched atop a hill in Westchester County, New York, could be mistaken for any number of houses in the area, save for one little, er, big thing.

In the driveway, a few feet from the front door, sits the battered severed head of a gigantic Sentinel, one of the X-Men’s adversaries.

The house, overlooking the rolling hills north of New York City, was a private residence until recently. However, in recent months, Airbnb has taken over and turned the house into a recreation of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, as specifically seen in the Disney+ animated series. X Men ’97.

That includes an interior meticulously hand-painted to make it appear two-dimensional, like in the cartoon, with the bedrooms, Professor

The X-Men mansion is part of a new effort from Airbnb, one that will embrace pop culture to offer its users the opportunity to stay in iconic properties, both real and fictional. It’s an effort the company calls “Icons.”

“The name Airbnb is a noun and a verb used all over the world, which is a good thing, it means everyone knows it. But the downside is similar to Kleenex or Xerox: it has to do with one thing, and we want to do more things,” said Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “We don’t just want to focus on places to stay, but also on experiences and more. And so I think this is a gateway for us to offer more types of services and more types of offerings, and really just do something that I think brings magic into the world and connects us to some of the biggest icons in the culture.

And while some companies would be happy to go halfway, Airbnb isn’t making a fuss about it. To where: Carl’s house from the Pixar movie Upwardsthat was recreated room by room, and that can actually be suspended in the air with a crane.

“I think it’s all about the details. You know Walt Disney always talked about the details,” says Chesky. “Walt Disney also said, if you can dream it, you can do it, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to do.”

The idea for Icons actually started… with Ikea, and a chance shopping excursion about ten years ago.

“One day we had to go to Ikea to buy furniture, and we walked past a bedroom showroom, and we thought to ourselves, wouldn’t it be kind of funny if we put that on Airbnb?” Chesky remembers. “And we said it as a joke, but we ended up doing it anyway, and it went completely viral.”

The company would continue to make other one-offs, such as the Barbie Dreamhouse or the Home of Home alone.

“It captured people’s imagination. And we started to realize, what if this wasn’t just a one-time program? says Chesky. “What if we turned this into a whole product on Airbnb? What if we gave it its own category, right on the homepage? and gave it the same level of severity and treatment as we treat the rest of the product? What if we do that more often, make the buildings even more fantastic and continually commit to doing so?”

Many of the Airbnb icons offer exclusive experiences that complement the stay. Guests staying at Prince’s Purple Rain house can listen to previously unreleased recordings by the musician; while a stay at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy, includes a lap around a track with a professional driver. One experience will have a guest join Kevin Hart for an evening in his members-only Coramino Live Lounge; and another features a private living room performance by Doja Cat.

At the X-Men mansion in Westchester, overnight guests can experience a multi-hour tour hosted by a team of actors portraying X-Men in training, including some unique cocktail making in Beast’s lab, and combat training from a stuntman in the danger room. Each of the bedrooms is themed with different X-Men, with little details true to the character (for example, Wolverine’s alarm clock has claw marks).

Airbnb’s Icons program also has two other fictional locations from Disney films in the works: The home from Upwards (it will be located in New Mexico), and a recreation of the control room Inside outintended to debut this summer ahead of that film’s sequel.

“We’re just trying to capture a decent cross-section of pop culture. But I’m especially excited about the extremes, either these imaginary worlds that no one has ever tried to bring to life before, or these things that are real but you could never access before,” says Chesky. “Most people don’t just hang out with Kevin Hart and get a 30-person comedy show from Kevin – he likes stadiums, you know – so we like to bring our imaginations to life and be able to give you access to something that’s real, but that you have never had access to before.”

Airbnb will have eleven icons at launch and promises to refresh them with new offerings throughout the year. Most will be free and first come, first served, but even those with a fee will cost less than $100 per person, per night (for example, the X-Men mansion costs $97 but includes the night’s lodging, the X-Men training experience, dinner and breakfast).
