Liberty Fire Department, trustees reach agreement on contract change

The Liberty Township Fire Department has reached an agreement with township administrators that will allow the department’s operations to be restored in the community.

Higher wages were the main focus of the agreement, which will help the department remain competitive with other departments when hiring new firefighters.

“This field is not as sought after as it once was,” said union president Ronnie Simone. “That means we have to compete in the same pool of firefighters as other departments that offer more money than us.”

Simone says other departments offer anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000 annually. Before this agreement, the department only offered a salary of about $48,000 for firefighters.

This new contract provides $21 per hour for paramedics and firefighters, or about $52,000 per year. Meanwhile, EMTs will make $20 an hour, or $49,000 a year, according to a notice posted on both the union’s Facebook page and Liberty Township’s website.

The goal is to hire five new firefighters to restore the department’s operations within the community. This also includes the full reopening of the Belmont Fire Station, which will temporarily close if the department is short-staffed.

Simone says he hopes to be fully employed again before the summer.

The union and trustees have begun negotiating since early April to amend their current contracts, which are in effect until 2025.

It will be officially signed Friday at a trustees meeting, Simone said.
