Despite cliché fatigue, Queen of Tears still ranks high in the Netflix Global Top 10. See other K-dramas that gained a spot | Web series

Since the start of the season on March 9, Queen of Tears has charted an unconventional groundbreaking song relative to the national ratings. Closing the chapter on the show’s traditional song with the season 1 finale on April 28, the Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won starrer achieved an unprecedented personal best average nationwide viewership rating of 24.850%. The series became history on Sunday and also recorded the highest-rated series finale in the history of tvN dramas.

The awe-inspiring spot was previously occupied by Hyun Bin and Son Ye Bin’s sensational hit series Crash Landing on You in 2020, whose latest episode achieved a record-high rating of 21.683%. tvN’s 2024 series has maintained its astonishing TV run, with the rankings each week eclipsing previously achieved personal bests.

While average viewership for Seoul remained at 28.381%, the latest data collected by Netflix also celebrates its long-running eight-week run on the Top 10 chart. On May 1, the Netflix Global Top 10 chart for the past week (April 22 to April 28) was rolled out for the non-English category.

Queen of Tears moved up a spot from its previous position at No. 3 and witnessed a rise on the global chart as it reached No. 2, racking up a monumental 4.1 million views from April 22 to 28. The South Korean drama consolidated its hold on the global charts, maintaining its position in the Top 10 TV charts in 41 countries on Netflix, including America, Nigeria, Egypt, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Thailand and Others.

In South Korea, it topped the weekly list of most-watched TV programs.

Queen of Tears: Fan criticism of clichéd reinterpretation

While the general reception was favorable to the show’s massive success, fans also expressed exhausted comments about the show’s overly drawn-out clichés.

Reflecting a derivative approach to the story’s progression according to a formal checklist based on early 2000s footage, Queen of Tears’ amnesia and accidental mishaps repeatedly concerned many.

Nevertheless, the show’s ultimate weapon was its star-studded cast ensemble, which especially struck a chord with viewers thanks to Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won’s grippingly captivating performances.

Other K-dramas in the overall Netflix Global Top 10 chart

Netflix Originals Parasyte: The Gray and Goodbye Earth were the other K-dramas to reach the Global Top 10 ranking.

Starring Jeon So Nee, Koo Kyo Hwan and Lee Jung Hyun, the live-action spin-off of Hitoshi Iwaki’s manga, Parasyte: The Grey, enjoyed its fourth consecutive week in the Top 10 rankings. It received 1.8 million views and stood proudly in 6th place, falling from fourth place the week before.

Finally, the sci-fi dystopian series Goodbye Earth premiered on Netflix on April 26. The series debuted at 9th position on the Global Top 10 list and racked up 1.5 million views. Based on the novel by Kotaro Isaka, it stars Ahn Eun Jin, Yoo Ah In, Jeon Sung Woo and Kim Yoon Hye.
