Applications are now open for the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) 2024 Michael J. Day Scholarship for veterinary students.

The grant provides financial support for a research project on an aspect of infectious diseases in small companion animals, clinical vaccinology or immunology.

The grant has been established in recognition of Emeritus Professor Michael Day’s contribution to companion animal vaccinology and immunology in his role as Chair of WSAVA’s Vaccination Guidelines Group from 2009 to March 2020. The grant is generously supported by MSD Animal Health.

The first WSAVA Michael J. Day Scholar was announced in 2022 and the selected scientist, Nepalese veterinary student Somnath Aryal, studied the prevalence of tick-borne diseases in Nepal’s dog population, one of the first initiatives to investigate these diseases on the species level. Data from the project has helped highlight the importance of diagnosis and prevention of tick-borne diseases in animals in veterinary clinics in Nepal.

2023 German veterinary student Lotta Truyen is working on a project to improve the understanding of how CDV-specific maternal antibodies are transferred from mothers to puppies to improve future CDV vaccine strategies. She conducts her research in the Caddy Lab at Cornell University, New York, USA.

“The WSAVA Michael J. Day Scholarship is important because it provides the selected scientist with the opportunity to hone their research skills while pursuing an interesting topic related to immunology, vaccinology or infectious diseases,” Dr. Mary Marcondes, chair of the WSAVA’s Vaccination, the committee said.

“However, its significance extends beyond helping students, as the research conducted by the scientists benefits the entire global veterinary community.”

All veterinary students studying for a registrable veterinary diploma in an accredited veterinary institution in a country where the WSAVA has an affiliated association are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The deadline for applications for the 2024 Michael J. Day Scholarship is July 31, 2024. The successful scholar will be notified by the end of October 2024. Their research project is expected to be conducted between January and September 2025. Within three months of completion, the scholar is expected to provide a 1,500-word report on his findings. They will also be invited to present or publish their findings in English, as a poster or abstract, at the WSAVA World Congress.
