“When I was younger in grade school, I thought 50 was a great-grandmother,” says Tyra Banks, supermodel and former host of America’s next top model And Dancing with the stars. “I thought I would have tiny glasses and just have a duvet on my lap and watch soap operas all day.”

It certainly didn’t happen that way.

“What my life is like now is completely different from what I thought my 50th would be like when I was a little girl,” says Banks, who celebrated her milestone birthday in Australia, where she has worked and worked with her boyfriend Louis Bélanger Martin. lived. and son York Banks Asla, 8 (whom she shares with ex Erik Asla). “I’m rocking. I’m not insecure about myself. I’m not tripping. I often say, ‘Kid, (I’m) 50!’ before I say anything. That statement gives me permission to say whatever I want to say.”

At this age, Banks really knows himself. “I’m a mom and an entrepreneur,” she says of her Smize & Dream ice cream business. “I do Zoom meetings without makeup and put on my wig. . . . 50 feels good.”

What do you wish women approaching 50 knew?
Women approaching 50, I’m not sure if you’re experiencing hot flashes yet, but it can come and it’s not the end of the world.

Use the time you wake up in the middle of the night to take care of some things, because that’s when you wake up. Read that book, do that crossword puzzle. Watch the ending of that show that amazed you.

Don’t trip over it. Don’t be ashamed of it because we’re all going to experience it and now we can do it together and talk about it, which is really cool and way better than what our parents had to do: just hold it in and pretend I’m not short-tempered. Isn’t that the sun? No child. That’s you and that’s okay, boo.

What shifts have you seen in the perception of aging or beauty over the years?
I remember when gray hair used to be like, oh, you just hid that. You didn’t show that that was a no-no. Now I see women saying. “I’m gray. And that’s not only okay, it’s amazing, it’s beautiful.”

When I look at Sarah Jessica Parker with her gray streaks through that blonde ombre hair, she stands out. Andie McDowell, you are simply a gem. And I love it so much. I now have fake hair and my fake hair doesn’t have gray hairs, but my real hair does. And I walk around town with my natural cornrows, with my gray edges tamed with a little baby hair juice, but no dye.

Because today we celebrate women and we still have a long way to go, but we are getting to a point where we feel good and are not ashamed of the changes and the natural beauty that our bodies are going through.

How do you want to challenge misconceptions about aging?
I want to challenge misconceptions about aging by saying, “Kid, I’m 50.” And I said, “Kid, I’m 50,” when I was 49. I couldn’t wait to turn 50 because I felt it was a rite of passage to be my true self.

I’ve bit my tongue, said the right thing, spent my life trying to please everyone. And now I speak my truth. I demand respect. And it feels good. I can’t wait for 60 to come because I’m probably going to cuss everyone out.

Your mother has always looked so beautiful and seems to have changed little since you’ve been in the public eye. What has she taught you about aging and taking care of yourself and your skin?
I’m lucky to have a mother who isn’t negatively obsessed with growing older. She has gray hair, she loves her gray hair. She wishes she had more gray hair. And so I think it’s taught me not to be afraid of growing older. I’m not afraid of that. I see it as a privilege and I think it comes from my mother.

She was also all for the Vaseline. She rubbed the Vaseline over her eyes. And I was a Vaseline girl too. I’ve moved on to other things now, but every now and then I take Vaseline and think, maybe that’s why I don’t have wrinkles.

What beauty or style trend do you regret?
The beauty trend I regret is eyebrows that are so thin. I already have a lot of space between my eye and my eyelid, so of course my eyebrows are already very high. And then I picked them and just looked amazed. When I look back at those photos, I think, ‘That was beautiful? We look crazy.” So I regret that.

What makes you happiest right now?
What makes me happiest are the weekends. I love weekends because like I said, I put down that iPhone, I put down that iPad, that computer. Family, we’re going to the movies. We love the mall. Kid, we spend all day at the mall. We are that family. We’re going to the movies, we’re going to get a manicure. We get dessert. I mean, we just like a mall, like a movie, like walking around. It’s just my great family time on the weekend and I love it.
