Catherine Smith’s obituary – (1959-2024)

Catherine C. Smith, 65, of Plymouth MA, passed away at home on April 22, 2024 after a long illness.

She was born in New Jersey and lived in Rochester NY, Cohasset MA and Haverford PA as a child and teenager. She graduated from Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont PA and attended Yale University as an undergraduate. She subsequently earned an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Cathy had a career in industry at United Technologies Corporation in Hartford CT, in Finance and Treasury, then at Otis Elevator Company, where she worked as a Regional General Manager in Yonkers NY, then in Westborough MA, eventually retiring from Otis as CIO North America Operations. At that point, she had more time to devote to a passion of hers, genealogy, and eventually began working for The Mayflower Society in Plymouth MA as a verifying genealogist. She was also the Mayflower historian for the European Society. Naturally, Cathy did extensive genealogies for her Prouty and Smith relatives and discovered that both families had ancestors dating back to the original Pilgrim settlers.

Cathy had good relationships with her many cousins from the Prouty, Smith, Tosi, and Rogers families, many of whom gathered every Saturday after Thanksgiving for a day-long Thanksgiving meal and event at Moraine Farm in Beverly, Massachusetts. One of the Saturday traditions is the evening poker game. Cathy’s skill at poker always kept her in the running to make the most of the table at the end of the night.

In addition to her passion for genealogy and poker, she also had a passion for baseball, which included negotiating the highs and lows of life as a Red Sox fan and, in keeping with Cathy’s independent spirit, she was also a Mets fan for a time. She maintained many friendships through the love of baseball as one of the original members of a fantasy league called the Greater Hartford Baseball League, now in its 35th season, where she was the official scorer and referee of all things scoring. To everyone who knew Cathy, from those who worked with her in the industry, to genealogy, to all her friends and family, she was always attentive, quick to smile and laugh, insightful and prepared. She will be greatly missed.

Cathy is survived by her mother, Ellen Cotts of Boulder CO, her father, Robert Smith of Palm Beach Gardens FL, her sisters, Allison Smith of East Granby CT and Melissa Smith of Palm Beach Gardens FL, and seven nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Debbie and Betsy.

She will be buried in her family plot at Norwell MA Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on May 25, 2024 at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Cohasset MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army or Doctors Without Borders.
